Athletes Race Reports

Check out my athletes race reports from races they have done!

The race was a very nice race starting off in a crystal clear lake.  The swim course was relaxing and a great way to conserve energy.  The bike course was unobstructed by cars and was the make or break point for the race.  I learned a lot about my pacing during this race especially on the bike.  Hydration was key to maintain control of your race and to set yourself up for the run.  I over-hydrated on the bike because when I dismounted and began the run I heard and felt water in my stomach.  I didn’t try any new drinks on the course but probably could have taken more electrolytes on the bike.  I made two drinks, one with Sustained Energy and Hammer Gel and the other with Heed.  I think I may have over concentrated the Heed.   As for the run…it was a nice track through paved and unpaved portions with the run winding through Metro Zoo.  I was feeling good for the first 6 miles without having to break or walk at any points, but at mile 8 or so I began feeling cramps in my calves and from thereon out I mixed running and walking.  Overall I was glad with my time but know that if I paced myself I could have had a better race.  Better to learn that now rather than in Arizona.

The race in general was staged very well.  Directions on the Bike and Run were well marked with signs and cones, clearly visible from a distance.

Swim- very easy and unusually fast times, no current, no chop, perfect temp, fair visibility due to so many racers.  Buoys were big and easy to sight.  Run to transition on asphalt very tough on feet - shoes would have cut 30 seconds off T1

Bike - Fast and Flat.  No wind so times were quick.  Lots of traffic coming back on 127th. Pretty boring ride, key for me was a negative split. I went out 1.8 mph under my average speed.  Very fast going south and west.

Run - Brutal. Temps were mid 80's direct sun. Cramping was rampant.  I kept well hydrated, used electrolytes which I should have started on the bike.  Course is flat.  The unpaved areas are very rocky and not smooth at all. A good 6 miles are in the parking lot or road leading out of the zoo and back in where there is no or very little shade and the asphalt was hot, temperature was probably close to 90 if not higher on this section.

I felt very well prepared, trained properly both physically and mentally.
